According to World Health Organization, every Lithuanian consumed 12.9 litres of pure alcohol in 2017, which is 43 handles of vodka per Capita and that is only the legal alcohol consumed during 2017.
Alcoholism is a severe form of alcohol abuse and is one of the biggest problems in Lithuania since the time when Lithuania was a part of the Soviet Union, but neither nationality nor country’s history make you an alcohol addict.
There are many factors that develop alcohol problems in people’s lives. It can be stress, loss of someone, anxiety. People start drinking to relieve stress and forget their problems, but little do they know they are increasing the number of problems.
An interviewee, who wanted to remain anonymous, said “Alcoholism is a lifestyle. Most of us, alcoholics, could stop drinking if we wanted to, but drinking is our way of living and no one can change it’ while the other added ‘People think we are unhappy, but we just drink a litre or two and the World is beautiful again. We couldn’t be happier than after drinking.’ And, at some point, they are both right, because those who want to quit has already started doing something to stop shortening their lives and live life to its best.
There are many ways that people with drinking problems can seek help – there are Anonymous Alcoholics, clinics that help people to get rid of their drinking, even specialists that specialize in healing alcoholism as it was a disease similar to flu or any other.
Who knows how long it will take to reduce alcohol consumption in Lithuania, but the Government is trying its best to make Lithuanians drink less and it is going just great – the numbers of consumption are slowly decreasing.
